چکیده

We use high-frequency data of 1364 Chinese A-share stocks traded on the Shanghai Stock Exchange and Shenzhen Stock Exchange to investigate the intraday patterns in the bid-ask spreads. The daily periodicity in the spread time series is confirmed by Lomb analysis and the intraday bid-ask spreads are found to exhibit L-shaped pattern with idiosyncratic fine structure. The intraday spread of individual stocks relaxes as a power law within the first hour of the continuous double auction from 9:30AM to 10:30AM with exponents βSHSE = 0.20± 0.067 for the Shanghai market and βSZSE = 0.19± 0.069 for the Shenzhen market. The power-law relaxation exponent β of individual stocks is roughly normally distributed. There is evidence showing that the accumulation of information widening the spread is an endogenous process.

Intraday Patterns in the Returns, Bid-ask Spreads, and Trading Volume of Stocks

Much research has demonstrated the existence of patterns in high-frequency equity returns, return volatility, bid-ask spreads and trading volume. In this paper, we employ a new test for detecting periodicities based on a signal coherence function. The technique is applied to the returns, bid-ask spreads, and trading volume of thirty stocks traded on the NYSE. We are able to confirm previous fin...

Intraday pattern, probability distribution, long memory, and multifractal nature

The statistical properties of the bid-ask spread of a frequently traded Chinese stock listed on the Shenzhen Stock Exchange are investigated using the limit-order book data. Three different definitions of spread are considered based on the time right before transactions, the time whenever the highest buying price or the lowest selling price changes, and a fixed time interval. The results are qu...

A simple approximation of intraday spreads using daily data

This study examines the relation between the bid-ask spread from the daily CRSP data and the bid-ask spread from the intraday TAQ data. We show that the CRSP-based spread is highly correlated with the TAQ-based spread across stocks using data from 1993 through 2009. The simple CRSP-based spread provides a better approximation of the TAQ-based spread than all other low-frequency liquidity measur...

Floor versus Screen Trading: Evidence from the German Stock Market

The last decade has witnessed a dramatic increase in both the number and the market share of screen-based trading systems. On the other hand, arguments based on the anonymity of electronic trading systems suggest that adverse selection may be a more severe problem and that, therefore, b...
